I had no idea Hrithik (Roshan) could dance. He was a quiet boy who'd come and rehearse dili gently,“ reminisces Farah Khan who choreo graphed the chartbuster, “Ek Pal Ka Jeena“ for the actor's debut film, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, which went on to become his calling card.
Farah admits that initially she wasn't too kicked about the Rajesh Roshan composition. “I thought it was too slow for a dance track,“ she says, recalling how they'd given the new hero really simple steps. But after a few days, she decided to play a prank on him and told her assistant to freak him out with some break-dance moves. Hrithik watched without expression as the steps were demonstrated to him, then, nonchalantly replicated them, exactly.

Farah was amazed, “Bloody hell, you didn't tell us you could dance like this!“ She packed him back home for two days and changed the choreography completely. “Now, even when he's 100, Hrithik will be asked to do his signature move, the air-pumping step, which just happened, with the body reacting to the music. I've realised that the simpler the step, the more popular it is as it's easy to copy,“ reasons the dance director who went on to win every award for best choreography for this song, including the muchcoveted Filmfare Black Lady.

She points out that this was the first song to incorporate an indoor rain sequence which went on to be copied in film after film. “I'd wanted some plants, the art director gave us a jungle with Sholay ka caves.I had to tell him I wasn't looking to make dacoits dance,“ she laughs.

The film made Hrithik an overnight star. And Farah insists that after his filmmaker father she was the first to notice he had that `magical' quality. It happened with the first shot he gave for “Pyaar Ki Kashti Mein“. It was a simple scene, with him looking like a shy, regular boy, playing the flute. Then, Farah looked at him in the monitor and was mesmerised. He was a natural actor, with the spark she'd seen in Rani Mukerji in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and later in Deepika Padukone during Om Shanti Om. It gave her gooseflesh and turning to his surprised producerdirector father, Rakesh Roshan, she announced, “Your son will be a huge star.“ The prophesy came true. Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai was the biggest grosser of 2000.

Sixteen years later, many still drool over Hrithik's sheer black tee which he'd picked after looking at 25, and which showed up his perfect physique. She smiles, “Today it looks campy but at that time it was a rage. “Ek Pal Ka Jeena“ still remains evergreen.“
