Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge completed 100 days last week and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai notched up a superb silver jubilee. The year 2000 saw the release of about 91 films till June 30th which is a higher figure than the previous year. Out of these 91 films, only a marginal 7 percent made a mark at the box office while the rest were duds at the box office.
Looking the top 5 films of the year, the no.1 position goes to Rakesh Roshan’s Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai which is still going strong in about 84 theatres in the country. The success of this movie gave rise to two brilliant performers in Hrithik & Anmisha and gave birth to Hrithik mania which is still spreading like a fever in the country as well as overseas.
Kya Kehna bagged the second position with it’s strong and a never-before-told story. It bought into limelight fading stars such as Preity, Saif & Chandrachur and silenced critics who always wrote off women oriented movies.
The no.3 position goes to Mansoor Khan’s Josh. Shahrukh Khan who desperately needed a hit to counter the Hrithik mania found a solace in this movie. It added an icing on the cake to Aishwarya’s rising graph career and made people sit up and look at Sharad Kapoor’s performance as well as gave one more chance to Chandrachur Singh. Mansoor Khan could not celebrate the success of this movie as his mother expired one week after the release.
Hera Pheri which mesmerized the Bombay audiences with it’s humorous and comedy flair bagged the fourth position. It was also a winner in some of the southern regions. Paresh Rawal emerged as the real hero of the movie while it proved that Akki & Sunil Shetty could also manage to do comedy.
Going by the current collections, Refugee bags the fifth position. Though the film is a major let-down, it has managed to attract audiences due to the debut of two artistes, Abhishek Bachchan & Kareena Kapoor and the hype created around the movie.
October 27 will witness the fight of the top three movies. Yash Chopra’s Mohabbatein will be in a duel with Aamir Khan’s home production Lagaan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir. If Mission Kashmir bombs, Hrithik’s position will be more affected than Shahrukh’s. Hrithik’s one hit put down Shahrukh and so the reverse is expected if Mission Kashmir fails in it’s mission.
Yash Chopra who has the highest success at the box office so far could prop up the sagging career of Shahrukh and write off Hrithik temporarily. The sword now hangs over Hrithik. Let’s see who gets killed in the box office wars.
The fight for the best male debutant of the year will be witnessed between Hrithik & Abhishek while Kareena & Amisha will lock horns for the best female debutante. Joining them will be Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Kirti Reddy, Preeti Jhangiani and others who are sure to give each other a run for their performance.

This week, film journalists and internet scribes received an invitation from Vidhu Vinod Chopra asking them to attend a live concert a fortnight later. The invitation card carried a message that those attending the concert do so at their own risk. Because the concert is going to be blown off by Kashmiri terrorists.
When our reporter called Vidhu Chopra at his residence, he was quick to reveal the suspense.
Mission Kashmir is nearing completion and only 2 reels are left for the climax shot. The concert shot is a live concert where the indo pop band Euphoria will be performing live and Hrithik Roshan who plays a terrorist in the movie comes to blow it off. Vidhu therefore invited the scribes to the concert and asked them to risk their lives by blessing him at the venue.
Whether Hrithik will be able to blow off the concert or not is a different matter, but the publicity carried out by Vidhu is really different, right ?

With Mission Kashmir becoming a hot property overnight after the success of Hrithik Roshan, there is one actor who is repenting on rejecting the same. Who is he ? Read on
When Mission Kashmir was to be launched, Vidhu Vinod Chopra had two stars in mind. Sanjay Dutt and Shahrukh Khan. Sanjay Dutt readily agreed to do the same on hearing the script while Shahrukh declined the offer as he was against a negative role at this time of his career. When Shahrukh rejected his offer, Vidhu was desperately looking for a guy who could fill the slot. And at that time, one name was doing the rounds in the industry and that was Hrithik Roshan.
Vidhu saw some scenes and songs from Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and signed Hrithik instantly. If the movie is a success, Hrithik will be laughing all the way to the bank. If the movie bombs, Shahrukh will be having the last laugh.
Who laughs last remains to be seen. What do you think ?
