Sanjay Dutt may have killed Hrithik Roshan’s family members on two separate occasions, ?but that hasn’t stopped the Agneepath stars from singing each other’s praises. Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt popped into the Khaleej Times office on Thursday evening to talk with us about their new film, the dark revenge tale Agneepath. A remake of the 1990 Amitabh Bachchan flick, the updated version sees Hrithik play Vijay, a man in search of vengeance against Sanjay’s dastardly drug baron Kancha, who murdered his father many years ago. Priyanka Chopra co-stars as Kaali, Vijay’s closest friend. The Bollywood duo were received on their arrival by Suhail Abdul Latif Galadari, Director of Galadari Brothers, before sitting down with us to chat about their new project, which comes out this Thursday in UAE cinemas.

 REVENGE AGAIN

This is Hrithik and Sanjay’s second film together, after Mission Kashmir (2000) – a similarly dark and gritty tale which set the box office alight on its release. Much like Agneepath, the film sees Sanjay’s character kill members of Hrithik’s character’s family. “This is the second time we’ve acted together, and I hope there’ll be a third and a fourth,” Hrithik told us. Ironically, Sanjay said he saw his co-star “like a younger brother”, so much so that he had trouble shaping to hit him during their fight scenes together in Agneepath!

HIT ME!

Both actors freely admitted to us that they were praying for Agneepath to become a bumper success with audiences. We asked Hrithik what he wanted to take away from the project, besides booming box office figures. “First, let it become a huge success at the box office, then we’ll see!” the crafty thesp replied. Both men also insisted they’d rather star in a commercial hit rather than an award-hoovering release.

ON FIRE

During Thursday afternoon’s press conference, Priyanka recalled an incident in which she accidentally set herself on fire while filming the movie. Thankfully, someone was on hand to put out the flames in a matter of seconds. “I had just left,” Hrithik recalls. “It sounded really serious but I’m glad it didn’t turn out to be so.”

SELL SELL SELL

We asked the actors to sell Agneepath to us in one sentence. Here’s what they came up with… Sanjay: “It’s all about revenge.” Hrithik: “Come watch Kancha!” (referring to his co-star’s snarling baddie act).

Much to admire

Despite their onscreen animosities, Hrithik and Sanjay had nothing but good things to say about one another while they were with us. “I never really said this to Sanjay personally, but when you’re on set with him, there’s no process to his acting – he’s just so easy all the time and it’s really inspiring,” said Hrithik. “I want to be like that. I want to evolve to that state. Sometimes, when we took to the camera he would look at me with such strength, in my head I had to call, ‘Cut! Cut!’ because I was being thrown out of my character. I turned from Vijay to Hrithik and watched him as his audience.” Sanjay was equally effusive about his colleague: “He’s always worked hard, and he’s so dedicated to each and every thing,” said the 52-year-old. “It’s not easy to be like that. I’ve seen such tremendous growth. I recently saw Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011). I loved it, especially because of him – there’s a marked difference between Hrithik as Arjun in Zindagi and Hrithik as Vijay in Agneepath. In that film, he’s so easy and so sexy!”

Agneepath: The trailblazers

The stars of soon-to-be-released Agneepath blazed a trail straight into the hearts of their fans at two events in Dubai. The first was an invitation-only high tea at the Armani Hotel where Sanjay Dutt, Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra interacted with excited guests who only wanted to click photos and hug their favourite stars, while bouncers gently kept them away, limiting two-three guests at a time. However, the stars were in for a limited time, rushing out soon after signing the hotel's guest book, leaving guests to enjoy the food. Later in the evening, as Chopra flew to Macau for the Zee Cine Awards, Roshan and Dutt met fans at the Dubai Mall. With all entries to the Star Atrium blocked for security reasons, yours truly had to be led through the service entry by authorised personnel.

As the stars arrived the four floors (three looking down) of the rotunda echoed with deafening screams as the waiting fans expressed their elation. A visibly excited Roshan looked up the atrium waving and acknowledging the welcome with a bow. "I can't believe this. I don't want to go back home," he screamed back. "Love you and thank you." Dutt and Roshan then answered questions sent in by fans while the crowd cheered them. "I had to shave my head thrice for the movie as prosthetics didn't work," revealed Dutt who plays the baddie Kaancha. "Of course, first through the main shooting schedule, then when Karan [Malhotra] said he had to reshoot a scene and the third time when he asked me to come back and shoot a song".

As the presenter asked them to dance for the fans, Dutt refused while Roshan said as he had not danced in the film he wanted a member of the audience to come and show him a step. Dutt relented as little Deepika performed the Chikni Chameli with Roshan and Dutt matching the thumkas. Cries of "Hrithik we love you!" still echoed as the stars left the atrium a half hour later. "I love this place so much, if I had a second home it will be Dubai," screamed Roshan to his fans just before leaving. Agneepath stars in Dubai [Video]
