Kabir Bedi to play the principal villain in Ashutosh Gowariker's upcoming period drama.

Ashutosh Gowariker's ambitious historical romance, Mohenjo Daro, has now found its baddie. After roping in Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde, the director was running from pillar-to-post to find a mighty opponent for his hero. His month-long search ended with Kabir Bedi.

A source told Mirror, "Ashutosh was really keen on Kabir but worried that his international commitments would come in the way. However, Kabir is confirmed and has allotted dates for the film."

When contacted, Ashutosh revealed that it was Kabir's performance as the villain in the Bond movie Octopussy and as the mad king in the Girish Karnadwritten play Tughlaq that prompted him to cast the actor. "He has been on my wish list for long. I still remember his towering performance in Tughlaq and his quiet simmering presence in Octopussy, as well as his works in many Italian and Hollywood movies," he said.

How will the veteran fare against heartthrob Hrithik? "His towering presence and richly resonant voice will infuse the antagonist with charisma, I can't ask for more!" says the director.

Kabir, who was on his way to London to shoot an indie movie, was equally enthusiastic. "It is exciting to be playing one of the most important roles in Mohenjo Daro, an epic set in the world's oldest settlement," he said. "I've known Ashutosh from my Los Angeles days - we go back a long way. The film has a terrific hero in Hrithik which in turn makes my role as the film's chief villain very powerful and thrilling."

While Kabir refused to elaborate on the details, Mirror has learnt that the film will have some elaborate combat sequences between Hrithik and the 68-yearold actor. Mohenjo Daro goes on floors later this month in Bhuj, Gujarat, where an elaborate set resembling the Indus valley civilisation has been erected.
