National award-winning actor Girish Kulkarni, who has played the role of the insecure wrestling coach in the Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal will soon be seen as a police officer in Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil.
Says Girish, “I hate being stereotyped, so I had resolved never to accept a cop’s role again, after I played the nasty police inspector in Ugly. But I have immense respect for Rakeshji (Roshan) and I just couldn’t say no.”
Kulkarni is the ‘most-hated’ person especially among children and hard-core Aamir fans. He laughs, “Can you believe it, Dangal director Nitesh Tiwari’s little son rushed to me and gave me a punch in my stomach as he stormed, ‘How dare you punish Aamir uncle inside a locked room’? Wherever I go, children seem to be running away from me and most adults give me the cold, ‘hate-stares’. Of course, I consider these honest reactions as silent accolades for my performance.”
When asked if he went through any prep for his ‘coach’ role, he shrugs, “Not really. But I did visit the gym and connect with the instructor for learning the body-language and mannerisms of a coach and later, I also acquainted myself with the ground rules of wrestling.”
Was he in awe of Aamir’s aura? He signs off with, “Not even once did he make us feel that he is an iconic star.”
