Making ripples in Bollywood

Film actors take a lot of pride in their looks, similar to catwalk kings and queens. They are aware that if their skin isn't silky and their body not toned to perfection, they can kiss their career goodbye. After all, filmmakers don't want to see flab unless the role demands it, and it doesn't matter how talented the actor is.

Even former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai, who is a darling the world over, was asked to lose the weight she gained during Gurinder Chadha's Pride and Prejudice. Dusky Bengali beauty Bipasha Basu felt so self-conscious of the few kilos she had piled on that she went on a rigid exercise routine prior to her scenes in the comedy No Entry (2004). Preity Zinta, Rani Mukherji and Esha Deol all look stunning now, but when they made their Bollywood debuts they were rather curvaceous. And if you think these svelte starlets are the only ones turning heads, think again.

Their male co-stars have left female fans across the globe yearning to run their fingers over those gorgeous-looking six-packs, firm upper torsos and muscular arms. Who am I gushing about? How about Hrithik Roshan, who looked out of this world in Sanjay Gadhvi's Dhoom 2. If you saw the film, you will agree that his bronzed complexion looked like he had stepped out of the cover of a Mills & Boon book. Kitted in leather, with his unruly long mane flying in the wind, one could get very used to that look.

Salman Khan and Saif Ali Khan's perfectly sculpted bodies and youthful form belie their years in the film industry . And they certainly don't disappoint their fans; Salman is often seen shirtless in many of his movies and Saif left little to the imagination in the bloopers of Siddarth Anand's modern-day romance, Salaam Namaste. Even with his clothes on, like the snazzy suit he wore in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya, his chiselled features were hard to conceal. Now that Shahid Kapoor's boyish looks from his earlier films Ishq Vishq and Fida have faded, he has become a babe-magnet and has given real-life girlfriend Kareena Kapoor more reason to hold on tighter to him. That he can bust some serious moves on the dance floor only increases his desirability.

When it comes to sex symbols John Abraham and Arjun Rampal, both former models, don't even have to say any lines in a movie, they just have to feature in it. How many people really watch Arjun's Yakeen, Elaan or Vaada for the storyline? And let's be honest, he is more famous for his dashing good looks than his acting prowess. Even John, who got his big break with Dhoom, hasn't been a tour de force in the industry. Newcomer Upen Patel, a former model too, made his Bollywood debut in 36 China Town last year and already has a gargantuan fan base. One needs only to look at his picture to understand why.
