The who's who of Bollywood turned up in full force at the Saawariya premiere on Wednesday night. There were stories within stories to be seen
Although Saawariya has itself gathered tepid reviews, the film's premiere will be remembered for its star-sprinkled guest list.
Surprise, surprise, the premiere, held at Imax Wadala on Wednesday night, began right on time. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the Saawariya kids, Sonam and Ranbir Kapoor, were stationed at the red carpet, welcoming guests. Sunita and Anil Kapoor were seen running around while Neetu and Rishi Kapoor received the guests enthusiastically.
The first one to reach the venue was choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant (no prizes for guessing).
Rani Mukherji was just a few minutes late, but immediately took her place right next to the Saawariya cast. Salman Khan, too, began playing host as soon as he entered the place. Karan Johar, too, joined the welcome party.
Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor made quite a few heads turn when they arrived together at the premiere. Kareena touched aunt Neetu's feet and the two hugged for a long time.
Crotch stitch: Salman Khan drew attention to his 'essence'. John Abraham's J-stitch (embroidered strategically on the crotch) fever seems to have caught on with Sallu. Chaddi pehenke phool khila hai: We thought showing underwear was Superman's prerogative but Sonali Kulkarni took over the mantle. If you have a magnifying glass at hand, check out the brand
Sushmita Sen, looking rather tall in a turquoise blue saree, chatted with Rekha before going in for the screening. Hrithik Roshan came with wife Suzanne, went straight to Bhansali and said that he was dying to watch the film. "I just had to come for Saawariya," he was heard saying. Priyanka Chopra came with her father and headed for the film, but not before talking to Salman.
Truly, stars descended in big numbers. Rekha came along with friend Farzana. She spoke to Rishi, telling him that Ranbir will bear the Kapoor cross well. When Asha Parekh and Dilip Kumar-Saira Banu entered, Ranbir and Sonam touched their feet.
Filmmakers Ravi Chopra, Kunal Kohli, Subhash Ghai, Ashutosh Gowarikar and Raju Hirani attended the premiere too. There seemed to be a private joke circulating between Raju Hirani and Sanjay Leela and the two were seen laughing heartily over it. Composer Ismail Darbar walked in with a fractured arm.
The exhaustive guest-list guests comprised Akshaye Khanna, Kangna Ranaut, Amisha Patel, Diya Mirza, Boney Kapoor and Sridevi, Vinod Khanna, Soha Ali Khan, Vidya Balan, Adnan Sami, Tushar Kapoor, Manish Malhotra, Nandita Mahtani, Sonali Bendre and Goldie Behl amongst others.
A toast to the couples
Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor: The most frantically photographed couple in Bollywood, lived up to our expectations. They entered hand-in-hand and gave bytes together, stuck together Sushmita Sen- Mudassar Aziz: Yet another first appearance with a suitable boy

7 November 2007 (Sawf News) - The premier of Saawariya, the first Bollywood film produced by a Hollywood company, Sony Pictures, was held at Adlabs Wadala Wednesday, November 7. It was attended by almost all A-list stars.
Notable absentees were the usual no-shows like Aamir Khan, and the stars and production crew of Om Shanti Om who are preoccupied with the premier of their film in London Thursday, November 8.
In addition to director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the stars Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji, Bollywood A-listers attending included Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Akshaye Khanna, Kangana Ranaut, Diya Mirza, Lara Dutta, Sridevi, Boney Kapoor, Amisha Patel, Sushmita Sen, Soha Ali Khan and Siddharth.
The first celebrity to arrive was Nach Baliye 3's Rakhi Sawant who set the tone for the evening when she said she had seen both Saawariya and its rival OSO, that they are very different films and that both films are "superior".
Rani smiled for the cameras but didn't comment, Salman Khan begged off on account of laryngitis.
Saif and Kareena, holding hands tightly as if they might fall off the planet if they let go, tried to duck the media completely.
Everyone else took time to speak about the movie and the new stars to the hundreds of press gathered there.
What is it like to be in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie right out of the gate?
Both newcomers pronounced themselves very lucky to work with Bhansali, and with each other.
Sonam said that since she didn't attend university, Bhansali sahib "is my university".
Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor looked every inch the stars they now are at the Saawariya premiere. Both were calm, composed and well-spoken with the media.
But their fathers were another matter entirely. Rishi Kapoor was so button-popping proud he could hardly speak a whole sentence and Anil Kapoor said, "I'm the nervous one".
Asked whether he thought his daughter and Ranbir were poised to become superstars, he said he didn't care whether they became superstars. "I care that they become good actors. I hope they become good actors."
