Hrithik, the toast of UK

The down escalators of the London department store Selfridges, which is celebrating 23 1/2 Days of Bollywood, were converted into a catwalk last week. All the way from the fourth floor to the basement, models wore denim and casual wear by Rocky S and displayed them for a select gathering of invitees.

The audience didn't seem to mind the one-hour wait, shifting from one foot to the other as they stood in anticipation of Rocky S's best known client. Yes, they were willing to tolerate the inappropriately thumping music, the less than attractive and unconvincing models (mainly from London) and the awkward position of the stage. They were willing to do so for a brief glimpse of their hero Hrithik Roshan.

The screams that filled Selfridges echoed Haan, pyar hai. The Roshan family stood by and watched, beaming from ear to ear. In less than an hour it was all over. And Hrithik was whisked away to Home House, the exclusive club in Portman Square.

Hrithik is quite the toast of the UK right now - a cover story in the Independent on Sunday magazine section, Na Tum Jano Na Hum and Aap Mujhe& in theatres and a live stage show in June.

Sporting the beginnings of a French beard and dressed in a white shirt, leather pants and a beaded belt, the press was pleased to see Hrithik 'the showstopper' that night.

The jury was out on whether he would actually show up after having been a no-show at a press conference earlier that day for his stage shows. Yatra in Mayfair was packed with hopeful British and Asian media representatives, tempted by a peek at Hrithik and a chance to quiz him on his career, love life et al. But they had to make do with Papa Roshan instead. Beta Roshan, it appears, was bedridden with a migraine. A shame really for show organiser Farhath Hussain who was clearly hoping to boost sales for his London, Manchester and Birmingham star stage shows later this month with some Hrithik motivated press.

But Hussain has a winning formula, one would think. It is a coup of sorts - both the Kapoor sisters, Kareena and Karisma, Hrithik Roshan, Arjun Rampal, Aftab Shivdasani, and, oddly, Raageshwari in the line-up for these shows.

The morning after the Rocky S show, Hrithik and Suzanne were off to Atlanta, USA, where his 40-day world tour begins. The French beard apparently being cultivated for the same.
