As the airy opening lines of Silsila Hai Chahat Ka floated across the stage of the Oakland Arena in Silicon Valley last weekend, Aishwarya Rai gracefully moved to the rhythm of the Devdas tune, accompanied by a dozen female dancers delicately waving tiny diyas in time to the music.

It was a captivating entrance by Bollywood's leading heroine, and a long-awaited moment for fans of the actress who stands poised to make her mark as India's most beguiling export to the West.

The Breathless show, which drew a near-capacity crowd to Oakland and then reached Los Angeles this weekend, also starred Hrithik Roshan, Lara Dutta, Celina Jaitley, Fardeen Khan and Shaan, with emcee duties handled by comedian Sajid Khan.

The rest of the world may be on the brink of discovering Aishwarya Rai - her first Hollywood film, Gurinder Chadha's Bride and Prejudice , opens later this year, with two more American releases to follow - but for now she belonged to Silicon Valley.

Rai's return to the Bay Area stage, her first since the Craze concert with Aamir Khan in September 2001, had the former Miss World sharing a stage for the first time with charismatic comeback kid Hrithik Roshan

Though Rai and Roshan have never appeared in a film together, they tried out their chemistry in a series of dance numbers from his hit films (including Koi Mil Gaya ) and hers ( Taal ), and later revisited classic Indian films of the '50s and '60s in a playful segment.

Lara Dutta was a standout, and her performance was one of the best things about the show.

Shaan reminded listeners that he is also an accomplished playback singer in his own right. Most singers receive a lukewarm reaction from star-show crowds, but Shaan did a masterful job in holding the crowd's attention. Manoj Kaytee of Super Entertainment said afterward that Kavita Moorthy of Chicago was added to the show in Los Angeles this weekend.

The pyrotechnic-packed show was produced by the Moranis and Soorma of Cineyug Entertainment, and promoted by Vijay Taneja and local first-timers Bombay Entertainment. Some audience members could be heard complaining that security problems were rampant at the Oakland show, due to overdistribution of backstage-access wristbands and lax security; while others noted that hundreds of people could be seen sitting in the aisles of the arena, in violation of safety laws.

But for Bay Area fans of Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan, Breathless was three exciting hours of music, and an unforgettable night of old-fashioned Bollywood glitz and glamour.
