Stunt director Andy Armstrong is the man behind the amazing action in films like the James Bond flicks The Man With The Golden Gun, The Spy Who Loved Me and Moonraker as well as more recent movies like Amazing Spiderman 2 and Bang Bang.
In an interview with us, Armstrong explained that it takes a huge amount of planning to pull of stunts onscreen. “What you see, takes months of planning. It’s a complex process, behind the scenes. Ultimately it boils down to trust. Your actor needs to trust that you won’t let him get hurt, it’s very much like a parent-child relationship.”
About the stunts from The Amazing Spiderman 2, Andy tells us, “Andrew (Garfield) is an athlete and that helps. He’s like a son to me. It took around 10-11 months to plan those stunts, we had some big physical ones, like the truck chase in New York, fighting an airplane. We needed a big studio arrangement, it was expensive and complex. Spiderman had very original stunts. In fact some were filmed in an old-fashioned way — like the truck chase was filmed like we would do during the 1920s; it was all very real.”
Closer home, Andy has worked with Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif on Bang Bang. “Bang Bang was a different experience. It was the first time I worked with an Indian crew. We shot in Shimla, Delhi and Abhu Dhabi, and it was a lovely experience. I’ve already signed another movie for Fox Star. As for Hrithik, he had already come in with an injury so we had to be careful that the stunts don’t aggravate any of that. He is brave and I actually had to talk him out of doing certain things,” Andy recounts.
Up next for Andy is a movie being shot in China. He adds, “I would love to do a Hollywood-Bollywood amalgamation. In fact I would love to worth with Hrithik again, he has the makings of a huge international star.”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is airing on Sony Pix today at 1 pm and 9 pm.
