Small B, Big Hopes

Abhishek Bachchan has been unlucky as far as success in films is concerned. But like his father Amitabh Bachchan, he has been touted as the man of the future. And Rajshri’s musical extravaganza Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon is being reckoned to give his career a much-needed fillip. Abhishek talks uninterrupted.

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon has you in the second lead. Tell us about the film.

Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon is going to have a great impact on the Indian audiences. It has had a powerful impact on me as well. Director Sooraj Barjatya has given it a magical treatment. Today, when the film is complete, I feel it hard to believe that I am a part of a film like MPKDH.

How did you get the role?

I still remember quite vividly the day Soorajji called me to narrate me the script and the character of Prem, which he wanted only me to play. I was in Hyderabad at that time. Suddenly, my phone rang and it was Soorajji on the other line. Initially when he told me that he is coming over to my house for a narration for me and my family, I thought he was joking. But when he narrated me the entire script, I fell in love with my character.

It seems that Sooraj Barjatya has a lot of impact on his actors. How has he influenced you during the making of the movie?

During the process of shooting for the film in India and abroad, I have emerged a better human being. Soorajji has changed me as a person. Working with Soorajji is a privilege that few get. It was an opportunity that I couldn’t have afforded to miss. In fact nobody would have dared to refuse an offer from a maker like Soorajji. He has given me a well-etched role in the film.

Tell us about the role of Prem you are playing.

I play Prem, a dynamic young businessman who is revered among his family and friends circle. He is shy yet a complete workaholic. His world revolves around his best friend, also called Prem, and his mother. It was not too difficult for me to portray this character because I see a bit of myself in Prem. In fact, Soorajji has written this character keeping me in mind.

How were your co-stars in the movie?

If Soorajji has made me more caring and kind, my co-stars Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor have taught me professionalism. Having grown up together, Hrithik is a childhood friend. Had we not been so close friends, I doubt we would have hesitated pointing out each other’s faults. His opinions matters to me, as he himself is a brilliant actor. I admire Bebo’s professionalism. She is one of the most talented actresses in the country today and I am proud that I have worked with her in two films now, Refugee being my first. I believe she has matured as an actress since her Refugee days.

I believe that you are mad about the music of the film.

Yes. The music is quite interesting. Anu Malik has done a fabulous job.

So, what are your expectations from the film?

With the soundtrack of the film doing quite well and the film also being turned out so beautifully, I see no reason why it wouldn’t do well. It is meant to be a big hit, like all Rajshri films.

For me personally, this film means a lot. I need to give a hit. It means a lot for a hero to be a part of a successful film. I am one Bollywood actor whose career depends on the success of this film.

You have also gone through a couple of personal tragedies recently. How have you dealt with it?

My parents have taught me to handle many situations. But a loss is a loss. You have to accept it and live your life with dignity. I do not want to discuss this matter any further.
